Wendell Berry (born 1934)

The Peace of Wild Things

When despair for the world grows in me
and I wake in the night at the least sound
in fear of what my life and my children's lives may be,
I go and lie down where the wood drake
rests in his beauty on the water, and the great heron feeds.
I come into the peace of wild things
who do not tax their lives with forethought
of grief. I come into the presence of still water.
And I feel above me the day-blind stars
waiting with their light. For a time
I rest in the grace of the world, and am free.

Michel,

I've often thought about this - and there is another lecture that I watched (I forget which one) where a student asked the same of Doc, and he (and Susan) were very clear about teaching right from wrong.  Susan even went so far as to say "you had better be judgemental", in the context of teaching right from wrong.  In this sense, it's clear to me that this is what I need to do as a responsible parent.  After all, what is the root of relativism?  The dilution of truth via the concept of "what is right for me is right, and what is right for you is also right", thus absolute truth (Supreme Godhead) is removed.

But this is also a matter of context!

A young child still needs to learn the basic tools they need to get by in life, and this is a fairly basic concept - hot vs. cold, wet vs. dry, etc.  It's language skill, really.  How do we correctly use our basic form of communication?  We all needed to learn this.  I suppose we need to master the basics before we can get into "no birth, no death", "my brother is myself"  and the like!!

The independence and rebelliousness of our adolescence offer us yet another quality
essential to our practice: the insistence that we find out the truth for ourselves,
accepting no one's word above our own experience.

Okay, i have a question...i've been watching one of doc Hawkin's lectures in which he talks a little about there not being any opposites...and that brought my daughter to mind. As everyone knows, we teach our children oppostites because it is part of the regular school curriculum....but with coming in contact with this new way of looking at things.....what are your thoughts on this? Thank you guys! Have a great day!
